An Exciting tour into the mines
Join us for a tour of the Gammelgruva mine at Løkken.. The guides will explain various mining techniques used over four centuries and the equipment involved. The drive from Bårdshaug Herregård to Løkken takes about 20 minutes by car or 50 minutes on the historic Thamshavn Railway. At Løkken, you’ll venture into the mine tunnels for an exciting journey back to 1654, when miners battled the mountain and contended with water and harsh conditions.
Once you enter the gate of Gammelgruva, you’ll feel like you’re in an entirely different world. Whether navigating narrow tunnels or large cavernous halls, you’ll be surrounded by rock on all sides. The construction inside the mountain is both robust and varied, and Gammelgruva is said to be Norway’s most colorful mine. The light hitting the rock surfaces creates a play of colors unlike anything you’ve seen before in a mine. Additionally, you’ll experience sounds and smells that are completely unique to the underground environment. The highlight is the stunning Fagerlisalen. Fagerlisalen which can also be used for dinners and cultural events for up to 300 guests.
The tour lasts around 1 hour, and visitors need to be able to walk 800 meters and navigate some stairs. Some tunnel sections may feel narrow, and high humidity must be tolerated. It’s advisable to have an alternative plan for those who might face challenges with any of these aspects. We are happy to assist!
A mine visit can be combined with a ride on the historic Thamshavn Railway, a visit to the Orkla Industrial Museum, or a meal at Sans Bergmannskroa.
