Bårdshaug Herregård was the home of the architect, businessman, entrepreneur, and international figure Christian Thams. Christian Thams was a strong advocate for the industrialization of Orkdal and Meldal, establishing Norway’s first narrow-gauge electric railway, the Thamshavn Line, and founding the mining company that evolved into today’s Orkla ASA. He was an active businessman both in Norway and Africa, with strong connections on the continent. Notably, he shared a close relationship with the Prince of Monaco. The story of Christian Thams and Bårdshaug Manor offers a fascinating glimpse into Norwegian and European history in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
