A modern app-based way to learn local history.
Most towns have an old town with charm and experiences to offer. Orkanger also has this in the wooden house district of Nerøra. Here, you’ll find fascinating local history on every street corner. And nearby are the swimming spots in Gammelosen, a marina, and dining establishments.
At the northernmost part lived the cottagers who managed small farms while taking on seasonal work at Strandheim Brug. As the town grew, businesses, accommodations, and dining establishments were gradually established. Much of this history is conveyed through the Digital Cultural Trail of Nerøra.
By walking along the cultural trail, you’ll learn about some of Orkanger’s diverse history as an industrial town, trading hub, craft center, and fishing site, as well as the role played by industrial entrepreneur Christian Thams.
The cultural trail has eleven stops with posters and QR codes for videos: Orkanger Church, Fallet, Næbbmælen, Fernie Plass, Dampbakken, the steam engine house at Strandheim, Strandheim, Orkanger Station, the workers’ homes in Nygata, Riangården, and the birthplace of author Johan Bojer in Kåresgata. A map of the stops can be downloaded from the posters, making it easy to follow the digital cultural trail in Nerøra.
Each video clip is about three minutes long and takes us back in time at the location where the posters are placed. The stories are based on author Irene Volden’s tale of Litj-Johan in Nerøra. The films were produced by the company UpNorth, thanks to the efforts of local amateur actors.
